Preheat to ensure even heating, gradually pre-heat the pot on a hob of a similar diameter
 
Since cast iron holds heat, it's not necessary to use a heat setting above medium. This helps prevent food from sticking
 
Use silicone, nylon or wooden utensils to stir food
